I am not sure which version I prefer on the 3 below (last picture is the sketch done without reference, white pastel and charcoal on pastel card 30 cm x 40cm)

When a bad painting become nicer

Some months ago, I did a lion portrait with a nice sky (sunset) that is the 2nd picture below.

I was not satisfied with the final overall look of the painting at the end (probably the color of the lion, the pose that had no grace nor prestige).

Also the sky was missing some depth...

Then one day I decided that I should re-use the nice sky for another artwork.

Just adding the mountain and the landscape already added more depth.

I also changed the pose for a more majestic's one (based on the tiger painting below) with a less close up view.

That is how I transform a disappointed work to a nicer different painting!

Just to show you how sometimes I used pictures references

In this case i did not change the animal pose. i place him in a different background, repainted it to match the whole color scheme
